Somatic Art Therapy: care beyond words through movement and creativity
Francesca Peruzzi, psychologist · 18 October 2025 · 5 min read

When pain lives beyond language, art becomes the bridge to healing
Sometimes the deepest healing does not come through words, but through the wisdom of movement and creative expression. Somatic art therapy offers a unique path that engages the nervous system directly, allowing the body to process and integrate experiences that may be too overwhelming or too deeply rooted to be reached through traditional talking therapy alone.
What is somatic art therapy and how does it work?
Somatic Art Therapy recognises that trauma is held in the body, often beyond the reach of words or conscious memory. This innovative approach engages the nervous system, the motor cortex and sensory processing through rhythmic, bilateral movements, mainly by drawing with both hands at the same time.
The aim is not to create beautiful artworks or to analyse symbolic meanings, but to support nervous system regulation, build resilience and help the body complete its responses to overwhelming past experiences. No artistic skill is needed: it is the body's innate wisdom that guides the healing process.
Moving both hands at once activates both hemispheres of the brain, while repetitive drawing creates a meditative, regulating rhythm; sensorimotor feedback loops form new neural pathways, allowing the process to bypass the cognitive defences that can block traditional therapy and supporting the integration of fragmented traumatic experiences.
Who can benefit from somatic art therapy?
This body-based approach is particularly effective for:
- greater emotional regulation and resilience to stress
- the ability to stay present during difficult emotions
- reducing anxiety and trauma-related symptoms
- better sleep and overall nervous system regulation
- more creativity and self-expression in everyday life
- a deeper connection with your body's wisdom and intuition.
Many people find that this approach reaches parts of their healing that other methods had not touched, and it is especially valuable for those who learn best kinaesthetically or visually, or who find it hard to process emotions verbally.
Each session creates a safe space in which the nervous system can regulate naturally while you engage in bilateral drawing. No artistic experience is needed: healing happens through the process, not the product.
What happens in a session:
- An initial check-in on your emotional state and setting intentions
- Guidance in using both hands at the same time in repetitive drawing
- A long silence to deepen the rhythm and awareness
- Simple art materials (paper, pastels, markers)
- The process is guided by bodily perception: there is no "right" way to create
- Moments of integration to notice changes in the nervous system
- Possible combination with other somatic techniques where helpful
The beauty of this work lies in its simplicity: there is no pressure to give meaning to what emerges or to create something aesthetically pleasing. Healing happens in the doing, through the body's natural capacity to move towards regulation and wholeness.
The science of bilateral movement for healing
Somatic Art Therapy draws on cutting-edge trauma research showing how bilateral movement can help repair the traumatic fractures of the nervous system. Drawing with both hands at once activates a sensorimotor feedback loop that:
- Creates new neural pathways, bypassing traumatic activation
- Supports integration between the right and left hemispheres
- Naturally regulates the autonomic nervous system
- Helps complete defensive responses interrupted by trauma
- Builds capacity for self-regulation and resilience
This is not just creative expression: it is a sophisticated nervous system intervention that supports healing at a deep level.
Beyond traditional therapy
While some traditional approaches focus on the symbolic meaning of what you create, Somatic Art Therapy is process-oriented. We don't analyse your drawings or interpret symbols: we trust the body's wisdom to guide healing through movement and rhythm. The sessions are for anyone who wants to grow and explore their inner world.
Many people notice changes in their nervous system from the very first session. Bilateral movement often creates an immediate sense of calm and centredness, which can last for days.
In the mental health field it is suited to:
- Emotional overload that makes verbal processing difficult
- Pre-verbal trauma that occurred before language developed
- Hyperactivated nervous systems that need regulation before verbal work
- Somatic processing that takes place below conscious awareness
- Building the capacity to tolerate and integrate difficult experiences.
It is also particularly effective for:
- people who struggle with traditional therapeutic approaches
- developmental trauma experienced in childhood
- complex PTSD that is too difficult to address verbally
- anxiety and sudden panic attacks
- emotional overload that words cannot contain
- feeling stuck in recurring patterns despite understanding and insight
- highly sensitive people who process the world intensely.
In person and online
Somatic art therapy can be practised effectively in person, or online in the safe space of your own home. For online sessions you only need simple art materials, and the bilateral movement and nervous system engagement remain fully effective.
Many people find that having the materials to hand at home supports the healing process between sessions too, giving them access to a self-regulation tool whenever they need it.
Integration with other somatic approaches
As part of a complete somatic therapeutic practice, Somatic Art Therapy integrates well with psychotherapy and other holistic therapies. Depending on your needs, we can combine this approach with:
- Traditional somatic techniques
- Nervous system regulation practices
- Bilateral movement and therapeutic sound
- Parts work and inner dialogue
- Breathing and grounding exercises
This flexibility lets us meet you exactly where you are and offer the safest, most supportive environment for your unique system.
Free your creativity, find balance and inner calm again: choose a somatic art therapy path.
As a therapist with more than 10 years of experience, I guide clients through this powerful method, which combines the latest neuroscientific findings with the ancient wisdom of creative expression. This approach is particularly transformative for people who feel stuck in patterns of trauma, anxiety or emotional overwhelm that have not fully responded to other therapeutic approaches.
